Crowd Management Guidelines Released

November 10, 2009

Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days of the year, is fast approaching. To help retailers plan for an increase in shoppers, the National Retail Federation (NRF) released on Nov. 9 a crowd management guideline.

“With Black Friday upon us, retailers are reviewing their contingency plans to make sure store associates and security are well-prepared for the big day,” said Joe LaRocca, senior asset protection advisor for NRF. “Whether it’s the holiday season, a celebrity appearance or an unplanned situation that requires security, retailers are constantly planning and preparing for even the most chaotic situations.”

Event type, staffing, communication and environmental conditions are among the factors retailers should take into account when developing crowd control plans, according to NRF. To view the trade association’s crowd management guideline, visit http://www.nrf.org/modules.php?name=News&op=viewlive&sp_id=821.

The guideline addresses the following:

• The types of promotional/holiday sales and special events that require additional resources and pre-planning
• The difference in planning for promotional sales and special events versus emergency management crowd control
• The different needs of mall-based retailers versus non mall-based retailers
• Basic components to consider in formulating a crowd control plan
• Contingency plans
The guideline also includes a checklist retailers can use when developing a crowd control plan.
